Chiropractic Adjustments
Adjustments-
What Are They?
Chiropractic adjustments are precise joint mobilizations designed to restore normal motion and function to the affected joints. When an injury or instability occurs, the body often responds by stiffening joints along the kinetic chain to protect the area. This stiffness, while protective, can limit mobility and disrupt normal movement patterns. Chiropractic adjustments work to release these restrictions, helping your body regain proper movement and restoring your brain’s confidence in controlling the affected area without harm. Joint adjustments are particularly beneficial for conditions that restrict motion.
How Does It Work?
Pain signals travel along the same nerve pathways as movement and proprioception, which is your body’s sense of its position in space. Under normal circumstances, the brain prioritizes the abundance of movement and proprioceptive input it receives, keeping pain signals in the background. However, when an injury or instability occurs, the body may stiffen joints to protect the area, significantly reducing movement input. This shift forces the brain to focus more on pain signals, as they become the dominant information source.
A chiropractic adjustment applies a targeted force to the restricted joint. This restores proper motion, floods the brain with new movement information, and helps ease pain by rebalancing the sensory input.
So It’s Not Just About
Popping Joints?
While the “popping” or cavitation of the joint can be a satisfying sensation, it has little to no effect on the actual outcome of the treatment. What is more important is that normal movement is restored to the area being treated.
