Open Book Stretch for Thoracic Mobility | Upper Back & Neck Pain Relief

The Open Book stretch is a gentle thoracic mobility drill I give patients to help reduce upper and mid-back stiffness and restore clean rotational movement. This exercise works well for posture-related tightness, desk fatigue, or anytime the mid-back feels restricted.

How to Perform It:

  • Lie on your side with your knees bent and stacked

  • Reach your top arm forward, then slowly open it across your body

  • Allow your chest to rotate toward the ceiling

  • Keep your knees together and stable

  • Follow your hand with your eyes and breathe normally

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Forcing the stretch too far

  • Letting the knees separate

  • Moving too quickly

  • Holding your breath

Recommended Dosage:

  • 10 slow reps each side

  • 1–2 sets per day as needed

This exercise is part of the movement-based approach we take at Mountain Movement Chiropractic in Spearfish, SD. If you’re a patient of Dr. Zach Hansen, use this as directed in your care plan to support better mobility and long-term spinal health.
